KG&E's 69-kV Substation with Transformers
These early 1940s single phase 69-kV transformers are not equipped with NLTC, nor FOA cooling, but do have conservator tanks--quite common for their large capacity--and passive heat tank deflection built into them. This switchyard was built by Kansas Gas & Electric in the late 1930s or early 1940s. The background 138-kV switchyard was re-built in the 1970s (?s). Presently, this substation is being equipped with a new transmission feeder. The line is being built as a 138-kV line but will probably operate presently at its rated 69-kV voltage. This switchyard is located on U. S. 75 just north of the Kansas-Oklahoma border and was originally built by KG&E. Today it is owned by Westar Energy. KG&E and Kansas Power & Light merged to form Westar Energy in the 1980s.
