Downtown Council Grove in Winter
Council Grove, the famous jumping off point on the Santa Fe Trail for pioneers, is possibly one of the oldest and most famous towns in Kansas. The town is the headquarters for an REA distribution cooperative and Tri-County Telephone Company. The town is cut in half by the Neosho River which is just a few blocks to the left of this picture. At one time, there was a toll ferry boat to take pioneer wagons across it. This was the last "civilized" site before entering the "wilderness" and Indian territory. There are over six different historical sites here and the Indian Mission is worth seeing as well.
