Mitchell-Tyndall NWBell Toll Lead Tangent Pole
This is a former pole of Northwestern Bell's Mitchell-Tyndall, South Dakota openwire toll lead. This structure was the last openwire line wrecked out by NWB in its five-state operations territory. Between 1979 and 1982, D. G. Schema, with the help of the Smithsonian Institution, and many openwire affectionados, put a grand effort into preserving two of these lines for the first time in U. S. history. The Tyndall line unfortunately could not be saved, however portions of it were dismantled for artifacts and preserved by The Electric Orphanage and D. G. Schema. The first attempt in history to nominate an openwire line to the National Register occurred in 1979. Today, the Tilford, South Dakota line has been saved and is seen today in the Black Hills of South Dakota just west of I-90 at the Tilford exit.
