Photo illustrating last openwire telephone lead in the five state Northwestern Bell territory preserved because of The Electric Orphanage's and D. G. Schema's two and one half year effort. It is located off an exit ramp at Tilford, South Dakota on I-90 in the northern Black Hills. The line was preserved thanks to the intervention of the Smithsonian Institution, astute individuals and historical organizations who were notified by D. G. Schema of the line's imminent demise and worked to preserve it in 1982.
