Black Hills and Tilford, S.D. Preserved Open Wire
This is a panorama of the last preserved openwire Bell System lead in the five-state Northwestern Bell Telephone territory, now owned by CenturyLink. This line was preserved due to the valiant two and one half year efforts of D. G. Schema and the Smithsonian Institution. Note the tangent structure in the foreground using Hemingray No. 16 Toll insulators and transpositions using drop brackets in the background. The cars visible in the far left photo are on I-90, just south of the Tilford, South Dakota exit. For more information about the preservation of this line visit: Song of the Open Wire on the Internet.
