North End Terminal Structure, Tilford Lead
This is double dead-end single BDE armed pole at the north end of the Tilford, South Dakota preserved openwire exchange lead. This line was saved through the efforts of D. G. Schema and the Smithsonian Institution. While this structure does not sport filters and other terminal blocks for the open wire, it does possess the typical C-type dead-end insulator brackets, double arming bolts, bracing, which was typical of such exchange circuits without carrier. Note the ready-access cable splice/terminal and the ANTW buried cable which descends the pole to a large ground-mounted 50-pair splice/terminal. This line was the last of the open-wire lines of Northwestern Bell in all of its five state territory and is found at the Tilford, South Dakota Black Hills exit off I-90.
